Battlefield 3 preview

Five years have passed since the release Battlefield 2, the first first-person shooter that dared to fight for hegemony over the genre with a monster ActivisionCall Of Duty. The battle has been going on for quite some time, but EA and the team from DICE hope to finally end the protracted battle with their Battlefield 3, continuation of one of the best multiplayer shooters of the past decade. Without deviating from the canons of the series, Battlefield 3 First of all, it promises amazing multiplayer, but EA Game Developer’s Conference, taking place in San Francisco, we decided to demonstrate the single-player component of the game.

Game release date: December 2011.

First of all, a few words about the technical level of the project. Battlefield 3 will work completely on Frostbite, the second version of the famous engine used in the dilogy Bad Company. As we remember, one of the most important merits of the first Frostbite was the amazing destructibility of the environment and DICE I decided to bring this part to the absolute. Do you think we can only tear apart small shacks?? Quickly throw this thought to hell, shave, put on a monk’s robe and live the rest of your life in a cave, praying for forgiveness, because Battlefield 3 multi-story buildings will fall down like houses of cards; The huge structures that seemed unshakable a second later will not leave even a shadow of their former splendor: it was you who destroyed them with your grenade launcher. A grenade launcher that is littered with scratches left by enemy bullets; a grenade launcher that will smash any building in the game into bricks, because in Frostbite 2 The best damage system to date.

The animation will also undergo an upgrade: a system will be used for character movements ANT, borrowed straight from EA’s sports lines. DICE They boasted for a long time that the animation would be more realistic than ever before in games, and we would even beat them up for such a blatant lie (you and I know what lengths developers can go to for the sake of PR), if the guys hadn’t confirmed their words with a stunning in-game trailer, which you can watch a few lines below. Well, and of course, in Frostbite 2, which was in development for more than two years, attention was also paid to the little things: the rendering of models and sound effects were significantly improved, giving incredibly realistic lighting inside the game, seasoned with ingenious sound. A more than worthy response to a machine that has been running for five years now Call of Duty.

The reason why technology in the game is given almost paramount importance was the desire DICE to create a game that would hit the relaxed body of the genre like a whip FPS, forcing him to gallop forward with all his might, as she did in 2005 Battlefield 2. And from what we saw at the EA stand, we can say that it will do this, and over the years of waiting for the third part, every gamer will receive a hundredfold. Demo version of the PC build of the game (and the PC will be the main platform for the game, since it is developing every day, and low-power consoles will not handle even a fifth of the magnificence of the game :3) didn’t reveal many plot details to us, but we were resourceful enough to extract a couple of facts from the developers themselves.

At the cranberry yard Battlefield the year is already 2014 (the terribly conducted Olympics have already ended in disgrace, yeah) and Iranian rebels (name is PLR) gather in large crowds near the border between Iran and Iraq. As it is usually found in cranberry universes (remember the same Homefront), The rebels are driven by the desire to establish a worldwide Islamic Caliphate, and the good American guys decide to cut the threat in the bud. You are playing for Sergeant Henry "Indian" (Buck) Blackburn, American Marine serving in a unit near the border (however, it is not yet entirely clear whether the sergeant will be the only character who will have to save the world throughout the game).

The demo begins with a briefing in which Blackburn and three other Marines are tasked with finding a squad of missing soldiers who were on the trail of a possible chemical weapons location. The path of Blackburn and his comrades ran through several cramped streets and an abandoned school, and here we see work Frostbite 2.0 in action: the sun’s rays seep through each other and suddenly start dancing with the shadows and specks of dust frozen in the air – it all looks simply amazing. When the team approaches a parking lot surrounded by tall buildings, everything suddenly goes awry: a sniper shoots one of Blackburn’s colleagues. And when our team is hit by a barrage of bullets from the rebels who are behind the cars, a developer from DICE shows us the first of the gameplay innovations Battlefield: the ability to drag wounded teammates to cover with a quick keystroke, reminiscent of arcade quick-time events. This, as you can imagine, is not the fastest process, but the developer manages to quickly carry the soldier into the building, protecting him from bullets. However, another problem was immediately added to the wounded partner: an enemy with a bazooka sat on the balcony of the building opposite. Blackburn quickly throws a grenade towards the balcony, killing the enemy and at the same time revealing a new damage system: the explosion of a grenade raises a whole storm of dust and small debris – it looks, believe me, magical.

The demo flies further through the level: now the squad is standing on the roof of a building trying to take down the annoying sniper. It’s a really tense moment as the team runs from cover to cover while the sniper fires one bullet after another in their direction. When there is nowhere left to run, the entire squad lies down on their stomachs (yes, they can lie down again) and crawls along the ground to the edge of the low wall enclosing the roof. Finally, Blackburn picks up a grenade launcher and as the squad sits down along the wall to provide covering fire, he stands up and fires at the opposite building. The shock wave destroys the entire floor – glass shards fly to the sides, blocks of concrete spectacularly fly down. The sniper is buried somewhere among this debris.

The demo again cuts to another part of the level, where Blackburn, this time, alone, walks along a wire leading to a bomb. Blackburn crawls through the ventilation for a long time until, finally, the wire leads him to a small warehouse where the explosives are located. But somehow, just as he decided to neutralize it, he was thrown back by a powerful blow from a soldier guarding the warehouse. Hand-to-hand combat begins – at the right moment the developer presses the mouse button and Blackburn strikes (yes, this is a quick-time-event again). As his opponent is sent to the next world, Blackburn turns and disarms the explosives, only to rejoin his squad a minute later, who are again involved in a firefight.

The road to the detachment lies through an overpass filled with enemy soldiers, but our hero has a convincing argument to mow down the enemy ranks – a heavy assault rifle, which he picked up from a killed Iranian. Having settled down behind sheets of metal, Blackburn almost said goodbye to life, as his shelter was blown apart by bullets in a few seconds, but at that moment a friendly helicopter joined the battle and everything quickly ended. At the end of the firefight, Blackburn quickly runs to a jeep with a mounted Browning (a really cool machine gun with ammo the size of your leg, in case you didn’t know), to again cut into shreds crowds of enemy soldiers. And here Blackburn’s superhero abilities died out: massive tremors suddenly shook the city, throwing the hero out of the jeep. As soon as he manages to wake up, right in front of his eyes the building collapses with a terrible roar. And, you know, even this doesn’t interest Blackburn too much – he’s much more curious about the helicopter that suddenly appeared five meters above him: it’s about to crush someone. The demo ends on this intriguing point.

We still have a lot of unanswered questions, such as whether the story will be better than the nonsense in Bad Company 2; what cities will we visit during the game and, most importantly, what kind of changes are planned for multiplayer. But despite this, we understood a lot from the demo Battlefield 3 – it is obvious that the single will be a first-class cinematic spectacle. The game looks great from start to finish: the visual component boasts not only impressive effects, but also a sea of details that help you immerse yourself in this already realistic world. We are definitely looking forward to news about the game that has decided to end the war with Call of Duty already in the fall of this year PC, Xbox 360 And PS3.

By the way, now, after reading this preview, I think you will understand the events shown in the premiere trailer for Battlefield 3:
